OUAI Hair Oil Is £30. These UK Indie Brands Match It For Less
OUAI's hero hair oil is around £30. The Wave Spray is around £24. A complete routine runs £100+. The British indie scene matches OUAI on quality across most of the range, often beats it on ingredient honesty, and undercuts it meaningfully on price. Here are the names worth knowing.

The OUAI Cult
OUAI sells haircare wrapped in a fragrance experience, designed for Instagram, fronted by celebrity stylist Jen Atkin, owned (since 2022) by Procter & Gamble. The hero products are genuinely good. The price tier sits in the £24 to £30 band for shampoos, conditioners and oils.
The British indie hair scene competes directly in this band on quality, often beats it on ingredient honesty, and meaningfully undercuts it on price. The exception is the scent strategy. OUAI's distinctive fragrance profiles are difficult to replicate.
This article goes through OUAI's product lines and names the UK indie alternatives worth knowing about.
If You Buy OUAI For The Hair Oil
The OUAI Hero Hair Oil (around £30) is a well-formulated argan-and-silicone blend in OUAI's signature scent. It is comparable in formulation to the Moroccanoil Treatment we covered separately, with a different scent profile.
The UK indie hair-oil scene competes directly here.
Bouclème, the London-based curl care brand formulating in the UK since 2013, makes finishing oils around £15 to £20. The blends are designed for textured hair specifically but work on any type. The founder-led story is exactly the indie credibility that OUAI's marketing imitates.
Afrocenchix has been quietly building a community for over a decade with small-batch oils that compete on ingredient quality at £15 to £20.
Hair Syrup, the TikTok-led UK hair-oil brand, sells finishing oils around £15 with one of the most engaged customer communities in British indie beauty.
Three names. Each at roughly half OUAI's price. The ingredient quality is broadly comparable. OUAI's specific scent is not replicable, but everything else is.
If You Buy OUAI For The Wave Spray
This is OUAI's hardest-to-replace product. The texturising wave spray category has surprisingly few credible UK indie players. Most British indie hair brands focus on care (shampoo, conditioner, oils, masks) rather than styling.
Cloud Nine makes a sea-salt-style spray. Diva Pro Styling has a few options. A handful of newer UK brands are trying.
Honest assessment: if the OUAI Wave Spray is the OUAI product you genuinely love, this is the one corner where the British indie scene has not caught up. We will be featuring more UK indie styling brands as Dripscan onboards them. For now, the OUAI Wave Spray is one of the few honestly-defensible OUAI buys.
If You Buy OUAI For The Shampoo And Conditioner
This is the easiest swap. Mid-premium haircare with scent-led packaging is one of the most competitive categories in British indie beauty. UK formulators in the £15 to £25 band match or beat OUAI on ingredient quality, often with cleaner formulations.
Look for British brands that make scent a deliberate part of the product (not just a fragrance hidden in the formula). Several London and Manchester-based indies now build their shampoos and conditioners around essential-oil profiles rather than synthetic fragrance, which is closer to what scent-forward haircare should be doing in 2026 anyway.
A British indie shampoo-and-conditioner pair runs around £30 to £40 total. OUAI's equivalent is around £50 to £55. Roughly half the cost for comparable performance.
If You Buy OUAI For The Mask Or Treatment
Treatment masks are the highest-margin category in haircare and the place OUAI's pricing creeps furthest above the indie equivalent. The OUAI mask at £30 to £40 sits at the top of mid-premium.
UK indie masks in the £15 to £25 range deliver comparable performance for most hair types. Bouclème makes a curl-focused mask. Several smaller indie brands sell masks in the £20 range with full ingredient transparency.
What To Pair: Heat Protection
OUAI does not really lead with heat protection. The brand's hero products are styling and finishing, not before-styling. UK indie heat protectants in the £15 to £25 band are some of the strongest products in British beauty in 2026.
This is one of the highest-leverage swaps in the entire haircare space. A £20 UK indie heat protectant used consistently does more for your hair than a £30 OUAI mask used carelessly without one.
What To Pair: Bond Repair
OUAI does not play in bond repair. For damage repair after bleach, colour, or heavy heat use, you need a different category of product entirely. We covered the UK indie bond-repair scene in detail in the Olaplex alternatives piece in this series.
What You Give Up Not Buying OUAI
Two things, honestly.
First, the scent. OUAI's distinctive fragrance profiles are the strongest single thing the brand has. Switching to UK indie alternatives means giving up specific scents. If you love a particular OUAI smell, that is a real loss.
Second, the Wave Spray. The British indie scene has not built a credible direct alternative to this product yet. If you style your hair around this product, OUAI is genuinely hard to replace.
Both are real. Both are limited to specific products, not the whole range.
The Pairing That Beats An OUAI Routine
If you want a single number, here is the rough budget that gets you better day-to-day hair than a £100 to £130 OUAI routine.
- Hair oil: UK indie, £15 to £20
- Shampoo and conditioner: UK indie, £30 to £40 total
- Heat protectant: UK indie, £15 to £20
- Mask or treatment: UK indie, £20 to £25
Total: roughly £80 to £105 for a complete routine, with most of the spend going to small British brands.
If you cannot give up the OUAI Wave Spray, keep that one OUAI product (£24) and the rest UK indie. Total still under £130, OUAI still in your routine where it earns its place.
The Honest Pitch
OUAI is a beautifully-marketed haircare brand built around real celebrity-stylist credibility, distinctive scent strategy, and a few genuinely great products. It is also, since 2022, a Procter & Gamble brand priced for corporate margins.
For most British shoppers, a UK indie routine matched to your specific hair concerns will produce comparable day-to-day results, support smaller British businesses, and leave £30 to £50 in the bank with every routine. The trade-off is the loss of OUAI's specific scents and the Wave Spray, both of which are difficult-to-replicate.
That is a trade most of us, honestly, can live with, especially if you keep the one or two OUAI products you genuinely love.
