Natural Deodorant: Does It Actually Work? An Honest Guide

The natural deodorant market has exploded. But the products range from genuinely excellent to completely useless. Here's how to tell the difference.

Let's start with the thing nobody says clearly enough: natural deodorant is not the same as natural antiperspirant. Understanding this distinction will save you from a great deal of disappointment.

Deodorant vs Antiperspirant

Antiperspirant works by temporarily blocking sweat glands using aluminium salts. You don't sweat (or sweat less). Deodorant, natural or otherwise, doesn't stop you sweating. It neutralises odour.

Most conventional products combine both functions. Most natural products don't use aluminium, which means they're deodorants only. You will still sweat. The question is whether you'll smell.

The Chemistry of Body Odour

Body odour isn't caused by sweat itself, fresh sweat is largely odourless. It's caused by the bacteria on your skin metabolising sweat compounds into volatile organic acids. This is what you smell.

Natural deodorants work primarily in two ways: by killing or inhibiting the bacteria (using ingredients like magnesium, baking soda, or essential oils) or by absorbing the sweat before bacteria can act on it (using ingredients like arrowroot or kaolin clay).

The best natural deodorants address both bacteria and absorption. The worst address neither.

What Actually Works

In testing, the formats that perform best are creams and sticks with magnesium hydroxide as the primary active ingredient. Magnesium works differently from baking soda, it's less likely to cause irritation while still effectively controlling odour.

Spray formats are generally the weakest, they don't deliver enough active ingredient per application. Crystal deodorants require significant friction to work and most people don't apply them correctly.

The Transition Period

There's a real transition period when switching from conventional antiperspirant to natural deodorant, typically two to four weeks where your body adjusts. Your sweat glands, no longer blocked, may temporarily overproduce. Many people give up during this period and conclude that natural deodorant doesn't work.

It does work. But you have to get through the adjustment.
