The Problem With Vinted (And What It Actually Gets Right)

Vinted has transformed secondhand fashion in the UK. But its model creates specific problems for anyone trying to build a brand rather than clear a wardrobe.

Vinted has done something genuinely impressive. It has normalised secondhand fashion in a demographic that previously had little interest in it. The platform's zero-seller-fees model attracted millions of listings and millions of buyers, and it built a habit around secondhand consumption that did not exist at scale five years ago.

This is worth acknowledging before discussing where it falls short. Vinted solved a real problem well.

What Vinted Gets Right

The zero seller fees model is the headline feature and it is genuinely attractive. Sellers list for free, price their items, and receive the full listed price. Vinted charges a buyer protection fee to the buyer rather than the seller, which means the platform's cost is borne by the person receiving the item rather than the person sending it.

For clearing a wardrobe or maintaining a small secondhand side business, this is a strong model. The friction of listing is low. The buyer base is large and active. The category focus on clothing means buyers know what they are looking for.

The Brand Building Problem

For anyone trying to build a recognisable brand, Vinted's model creates specific obstacles.

The platform is structured around individual items rather than sellers. There is no meaningful brand profile, no way to build a following around a distinct aesthetic, and no mechanism for buyers to discover your work as a coherent body rather than a collection of individual listings.

The pricing culture is shaped by secondhand economics. Buyers on Vinted are trained to expect secondhand prices because the vast majority of what they see is secondhand. Listing original, newly made products at full price creates a mismatch between expectation and reality that affects conversion regardless of the quality of the product.

Vinted is a wardrobe clearance tool that became a platform. The architecture still reflects that origin.

The Category Constraints

Vinted's strength is everyday clothing at accessible price points. The platform's buyer behaviour data reflects this: items priced above £50 convert significantly less well than on platforms where buyers expect to spend that amount.

For independent fashion brands operating above the fast fashion price point, this category constraint is limiting. Your customer is not on Vinted, or if they are, they are not in the mindset to buy what you are selling.

Where It Belongs in Your Strategy

Vinted has a legitimate place in a multi-channel strategy for the right use cases. If you have end-of-season stock to clear, damaged samples, or secondhand pieces from your personal wardrobe, Vinted is a reasonable channel.

For building a brand, it is the wrong environment entirely. The platform optimises for volume and velocity rather than quality and identity. Those are different games.
